Let me just speak for ALL of my college peers when I say, "THIS IS GHETTO". I mean honestly, this virus has turned our college world as we knew it, upside down. This transition is especially hard for those of us who have never taken online classes/never taken so many online classes at once. It seems as if our teachers are actually assigning MORE work to compensate the fact that we no longer have class face to face. I guess the assumption is that since we're home now and are supposed to be in "quarantine", we have more time to do work. Well sis, we don't. For those who took advantage of the opportunity to make some extra cash during this pandemic and are struggling to keep up with work, I feel you.
With finals coming up, I thought it would be great time to share some tips that have helped to make my days more productive so that I get work done efficiently. I also want to share some study tips that have helped me tremendously in college.
1) LEARN YOUR LEARNING STYLE! Read that again. Finding out your learning style can help you study efficiently while retaining information. There are all kinds of styles but there are mainly three that I hear about all the time : auditory, kinesthetic, and visual. Some people only have one learning style, and some people can learn by all three. Either way, figuring out how you learn best will definitely optimize your study time! There are all types of quizzes you can take to determine your learning style.
2) Turn your phone off /put it on DND while you are doing tasks. Social media is such a huge distraction for me that sometimes I'll look up from my phone and 30 minutes have passed by! I typically get on my phone when I get bored with whatever work I'm doing. If you notice this about yourself, instead of getting on your phone try to get up and have a snack or do some exercise.
3)Figure out the time of day that you are most productive. Some people are night owls and some people love to wake up early and get things done. Whichever one you are, optimize that. Personally, I am more productive in the morning/early afternoon but sometimes I struggle to wake up early in the mornings because I stay up late the night before, so, to better optimize my performance during the day I am trying to go to bed at a decent time every night so that I am less likely to hit snooze on my alarm.
4) Don't be afraid of anxiety, use it to your advantage. We all experience anxiety sometimes, it's a normal human emotion. In fact, one type of anxiety can actually benefit you while studying. Mild anxiety actually increases one's focus and heightens your senses. Mild anxiety can be considered motivational as it causes you to find a solution to whatever challenge is at hand. Personally, I am always anxious when I am studying the night before a test. However, I have noticed that when I feel anxious about an exam, I am more determined to limit distractions and focus on the content at hand so that I can make a good grade.
I hope these tips were helpful. Good luck on your exams! You can do it, you're not alone!
